Welcome Back!
Thoughts on the beginning of the school year.
Welcome back!
As we begin to welcome students back to school, I wanted to share some thoughts about the beginning of the school year. I would love to hear others insight on what you do at the beginning of the school year so please comment, tweet, or send me an e-mail.
The beginning of the school year is full of fun, angst, sleepless nights, and re connections. And this is just speaking for the teachers! Just kidding, I think these are some of the feelings that are being experienced from staff, students, parents, guardians, siblings, and friends. As you are beginning the 2022-2023 school year I wanted to share some words of encouragement and some ideas to build a strong foundation for the upcoming school year. These ideas could apply for the brand-new teacher to the seasoned vet thinking about retirement. The best part about these ideas is they are proven, simple, and will work.
Know your students- It’s that simple, don’t over complicate it. The complexity comes in following through on the advice. Its easy to talk about but can you walk the walk. When I say know your students, I mean truly get an understanding of who they are. This starts early by learning names and faces and then builds from there. Learning a student’s name is the first step in showing that you care. Find a way to make this a goal as soon as you begin the year. Learn your students name as quickly as possible. It is step 1 in the relationship building process.
Have a plan/ 5p’s- Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Take time early on to build a plan. When you start with your plan start with the end in mind. This will cause you to think from the end and work your way all the way to the begging. The beauty of this, is that it allows you to zoom out and see the whole year from 30,000 feet. Your plan is going to change (I’m not sure if you know this but teaching requires flexibility, and lots of it!) but you will have a strong foundation to work from that can be adapted as you get to know your students and their learning styles. The 5p’s are going to allow you to sleep better, feel more relaxed, and focus on what’s most important. Building relationships.
You- The students are lucky to have you, and this is possibly the most important job on the planet besides being a parent or guardian. Think about what you would want your own kids to have in a teacher and do those things. It doesn’t have to be complicated. It must be meaningful and real. The students, parents, and staff will see that and it will be a great foundation for the 2022-2023 school year.
I hope that all of you had a restful summer and are excited to start the school year. There will be ups and downs but try to remember that the journey is greater than the destination. If there is something that I can do to support, you on your journey please don’t hesitate to contact me.

TLDR:
1)Get to know your students. 2) Have a plan. 3) Be the teacher you would want your own kids to have.
